The pattern is Simplicity 2226. Fabric is Kasbah from Lark by Amy Butler. One of my all time favorite prints. In fact, my phone has a skin on it that matches (can be seen in the Instagram photo in my previous post).
It was a really easy make. It took about 4 total hours including tracing the pattern on freezer paper and cutting. Coming so soon after the pride I had making a pretty successful muslin of Simplicity 1879, I decided to just go for it and not make a muslin for this one. I was too excited!
I should have taken Anna's advice from the sew along she hosted to at least make a practice waist band. But I didn't. And now my skirt is too big! Oops.
So here's my question, having never done this before. How exactly do I take it in? Do I need to take the whole skirt apart? I was thinking maybe I could just somehow take in the waist bands at the side seams and not fiddle with the rest of the skirt, since it's gathered. But I really don't have a clue! Such a newbie question, I know. :)
I have no advice for you, but it looks great and I hope you can get it to fit right.
ReplyDeleteNo clue. I haven't had the problem of a too-big skirt in quite some time . . . . But it looks great!! Good luck getting a better fit.

ReplyDeleteI think if it were me, I'd remove the waistband, make it the right size, then just gather the skirt in a bit more and stitch away.
It's doesn't look so big that you couldn't make up the difference with a few extra gathers. Just my opinion!
I would remove the band as well. I think the result would be neater, as it is such a lovely skirt!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute skirt and yes the print is gorgeous. If you don't want to take the skirt apart to remedy the waistband try adding elastic either to the inside of the band at the back or at both sides. Depending on how much too big the band is it may not show too bad. Otherwise, yep, you'll have to take the band off, adjust the size, gather the skirt a little more and then stitch the band back on.
ReplyDeleteYou look great! I'm guessing the "right" answer is to pretty much take it all apart, but I would just try what makes sense to you. After all, you can pin what seems right before cutting, try it on and test it!

ReplyDeleteI too made this skirt last summer and my first try was waayy to big. But I used clearance rack fabric so after beating my head about how to alter it, I just gave it away to someone it would fit. My 2nd version I made 2 sizes smaller than the measurements suggested and it was a great fit. Good luck with your alterations!
